On a Sunday around noon, we received a call from a customer from San Jose reporting that they had no hot water. Even though it was the weekend, we couldn't leave our client without hot water, so we promptly headed out to diagnose the problem. The unit in question was a Rheem water heater, a brand we’ve often seen with this specific issue.
Upon inspection, it was clear that the chamber sensor needed to be replaced. Fortunately, we always try to keep common replacement parts like this in our truck, so we were able to fix the problem on the spot. However, during a more thorough inspection of the installation, we uncovered several major issues that went beyond just the chamber sensor.
The vent pipe on the water heater was made of rusty, poorly connected segments, with one part even fashioned out of what appeared to be a tin can. On top of that, the gas shutoff valve was incredibly old—about 50 years by our estimation—and was leaking. It was surprising that the previous installers hadn’t replaced it, but then again, considering the condition of the vent pipe, this wasn't entirely unexpected.
Sadly, we encounter this scenario quite frequently: homeowners trying to cut costs by hiring unqualified plumbers or handymen. While this might save money in the short term, it often leads to unsafe installations that could result in costly repairs or dangerous conditions down the line.
We replaced the old, makeshift vent pipe with a proper vent, swapped out the faulty gas shutoff valve, installed a new gas connector, and added a sediment trap for additional safety and efficiency. While the installation still wasn’t 100% up to code, as a full code-compliant upgrade would have required further work, we made sure it was significantly safer and functional.
When it comes to installing or repairing water heaters, cutting corners can lead to serious safety issues. Proper venting and secure gas connections are essential for preventing gas leaks and ensuring safe operation. Hiring a licensed professional who knows the local codes and best practices is crucial, even if it costs a little more upfront.
Always make sure your installer replaces aging components like gas shutoff valves and uses the correct materials for venting. In the long run, investing in quality installation can save you from costly repairs and potential hazards. At SAV WATER HEATERS, we take pride in doing the job right the first time, ensuring both safety and efficiency.
